What is MS Pipe?

MS (Mild Steel) pipe is the most widely used steel pipe in India for plumbing, structural, fire-fighting, and general engineering applications. It is manufactured from low-carbon steel (typically 0.15–0.30% carbon) and has a density of 7850 kg/m³.

MS pipes are governed by two primary Indian Standards:

  • IS:1239 — covers smaller diameter pipes (½″ to 6″ NB) for water, gas, and steam service. Available in Light, Medium, and Heavy classes.
  • IS:3589 — covers larger diameter pipes (168.3mm to 2032mm OD) for water mains and structural applications.
💡 Note
The weight of MS pipe depends on Outer Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness (t) — not the nominal bore size. Always verify OD and wall thickness before ordering.

MS Pipe Weight Formula Explained

The standard formula to calculate MS pipe weight per meter is derived from the cross-sectional area multiplied by steel density:

MS Pipe Weight Formula
Weight (kg/m) = (OD – t) × t × 0.02466
OD = Outer Diameter in mm | t = Wall Thickness in mm | 0.02466 = π × density constant

Where does 0.02466 come from? It is derived as: π × 7850 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.02466. The 7850 is steel density in kg/m³ and 1,000,000 converts mm² to m².

Worked Example

For a 2″ MS pipe (OD = 60.3mm, Wall = 3.65mm):

Weight = (60.3 – 3.65) × 3.65 × 0.02466
= 56.65 × 3.65 × 0.02466 = 5.10 kg/m
For a standard 6m pipe: 5.10 × 6 = 30.6 kg per pipe

How to Read This Chart

  • NB (Nominal Bore) — the pipe's approximate inner diameter used for identification. It does not represent actual OD or ID.
  • OD (Outer Diameter) — the actual outside measurement used in weight calculation.
  • Wall Thickness — determines pipe class (Light / Medium / Heavy). Thicker wall = heavier pipe = higher pressure rating.
  • kg/m — weight per 1 meter of pipe. Multiply by pipe length to get total weight.
⚠️ Important
Always use OD and Wall Thickness for weight calculation — not the NB size. Two pipes with the same NB can have different ODs depending on the standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight of 1 inch MS pipe per meter?
A standard 1 inch MS pipe (33.4mm OD × 3.25mm wall, IS:1239 Medium class) weighs approximately 2.41 kg/m. For a standard 6m length, the total weight is about 14.4 kg per pipe.
What is the weight of 2 inch MS pipe per meter?
A 2 inch MS pipe (60.3mm OD × 3.65mm wall, IS:1239 Medium class) weighs approximately 5.10 kg/m. A standard 6m pipe weighs about 30.6 kg.
What is the difference between IS:1239 and IS:3589?
IS:1239 covers smaller pipes (½″ to 6″ NB) primarily for water, gas, and steam service. IS:3589 covers larger diameter pipes (168.3mm to 2032mm OD) for water mains and structural use. Both are Indian Standards for MS pipes but serve different size ranges and applications.
How do I calculate MS pipe weight for non-standard sizes?
Use the formula: Weight (kg/m) = (OD – t) × t × 0.02466. Enter any OD and wall thickness values. Or use our MS Pipe Weight Calculator for instant results with PDF export.
Does MS pipe weight vary by class (Light/Medium/Heavy)?
Yes. Light, Medium, and Heavy classes have different wall thicknesses for the same nominal bore size. Heavy class has a thicker wall and is therefore heavier. This chart shows Medium class weights. Use the calculator and enter your specific wall thickness for other classes.
